Seminars series – Prof. Rubén Vicente, visiting professor from University of Oviedo (Spain)

From 20th to 24th September 2021, Prof. Rubén Vicente Arroyo from University of Oviedo (Spain) will be guest of our department as visiting Professor.
Prof. Vicente graduated in chemistry at Complutense University in Madrid. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Oviedo in 2006 with Prof. J. Barluenga, developing synthetic applications of Fischer carbenes. After short research stays at the University of Bonn and Boston College, he spent three years as a Postdoctoral Researcher sponsored by the Humboldt Foundation in the group of Prof. L. Ackermann (Georg- August-Universität, Göttingen, 2007–2009), working on C–H bond functionalizations. He returned to Oviedo in 2010 and in 2019 he became Associate Professor at Organic Chemistry Department. In 2014, he was awarded with the Young Investigator Award from the Spanish Royal Chemical Society. His interests include the discovery of new reactivity patterns and sustainable catalysis.
During his visit in Milan, Prof. Vicente will hold three seminars on heterocyclic and carbene chemistry, opened to the Ph.D students in “Pharmaceutical Sciences” and to master students and researchers from our university.

“Synthesis of heteroarenes: tradition vs modernity”: the two seminars will focus on general approaches to the most relevant heteroarenes. A compendium of classical methodologies relying on condensation (and related) reactions and some relevant synthesis by means of transition-metal catalysis will be discussed.

20.09.2021, aula G12, 9.30-11.30: “Synthesis of heteroarenes: tradition vs modernity: five-membered rings”
23.09.2021, aula G12, 9.30-11.30: “Synthesis of heteroarenes: tradition vs modernity: six-membered rings”

“(Metal) Carbenes: more than cyclopropanation reactions”: carbenes are relevant intermediates in organic chemistry, yet its coverage in undergraduates programs is residual. This lecture will provide fundamental aspects of carbenes and its utility in synthesis ranging from carbene-catalysis to carbene transfer reactions.
